1 Response to The Value of Talk

Hi Kathy. I enjoyed your post very much. It reminded me of what Smagorinski refers to as the difference between rough draft talk and final draft talk. In my early years of teaching, I think I privileged final draft talk, using discussion to assess whether students were understanding content, etc. However, as I have learned more about my own practice and more about learning, I have found myself, like you, placing more value on rough draft talk. I find myself devoting more time and attention to teaching students how to talk productively to one another to meet their own reading and writing goals. TIme spent in conversation is never wasted. Your post spoke to my own experiences.
